STORY
The garden held a special place in her heart.
It had held a special place in her father’s heart too.
It was here he would go to escape.
It was here he would laugh, run and be silly.
Today’s visit had long been dreamt about. Often postponed.
But as she placed her hands on the same delicate wooden steering wheel her father had gripped twenty years earlier, her tummy filling with a rabble of restless butterflies, the excitement and anticipation she had felt as a child came rushing back.
Briskly threading a path through the winding country roads, the hedges blurring into a lime fog, it was as if the car also sensed where they were headed. With the wind softly ruffling her hair, she became lost in her memories, a state only broken by the quiet screams of the gravel under the car as she drove up the drive and parked up.
She walked into the garden, the deep emerald canopy cocooning her just as it had when she was a child. Tracing her fingers over the borders, the flowers seemingly reaching up to greet her, as they filled the air with the warmest fragrance and whispered sweet nothings to her.
The same abandonment and sanctuary she so poignantly remembered from her earlier visits still existed. This most special and tranquil of places had remembered. She had remembered.
Getting back into the car, her arms swollen with a bouquet gifted to her by her long lost friend, she felt a sense of peace come over her. For whatever life held, she knew she would always have her secret garden.
